Islamic Sunday School?

Did you know that many mosques in America have established ?Sunday School? as part of the services they offer? While many of these systematic classes were established for training Muslim children, many other Muslim ?Sunday Schools? intentionally reach out to non-Muslims in the their communities. These Sunday School programs often promote the ethical and family values of Islam which, in our post-Christian pluralistic society, resounds with great appeal.  Should this alarm us as the church of Jesus Christ? At a minimum, it should cause us to reflect and pray regarding how we should respond. Ultimately, it should challenge us to…

Shirk and the Story of Muhammad (part 2)

Sometimes in Muslim evangelism, it is one step forward and two step backwards. Ken’s story of his friend Muhammad continues today, as we discover Muhammad’s reason for returning his Christian books. Read part 1 here. A few days later we visiting the wife of his (Muhammad’s) cousin. She was British, and she was a believer. I related everything to her, and she told me that while we were gone Muhammad?s oldest son got married. I knew that, but then she told me something that I did not know. She said, ?On the night of the wedding, his second son was killed in a terrible automobile accident. Muhammad was the first one to the scene…

Shirk and the Story of Muhammad

In reaching out to Muslims, we must remember the unseen ways that Islam  can control and influence those whom we are trying to reach with the Gospel. The sin of shirk, explained below, is only one of the potential barriers that can hinder our Muslim friends. Some years ago my wife and I served as missionaries in a Middle Eastern country. After language study we moved to a village not too far from the capital city. We moved, because 98% of the people were Muslims. Also, English was not used as widely as in the city, and we thought it would be a better opportunity to practice our Arabic. We made friends in our new…

Tanzania is poised for a great in-gathering of Muslims!

Like so many other nations in Africa, Islam is expanding rapidly in Tanzania. Currently, 21 million people in Tanzania are Muslims, whichrepresent nearly 40% of the country?s population. Islam is growing exponentially due to several factors. For instance, the island region of Zanzibar, just off the coast of Tanzania, is 96% Islamic. The nation has also seen an increase of Muslim immigrants from India and several Arab nations. In predominately Christian areas, Islam is investing significant financial resources into the economy and educational system. Ultimately, the evangelistic nature of Islam is pushing toward majority control of the country. For the…

Eye On… Islam: Our Choice

As Islam grows throughout the world, the Church has had three reactions. Some have reacted with fear and anger, believing that the advance of Islam will herald the death of God’s kingdom. We demand that “they” go home and refuse to interact. We view them with suspicion. Some have reacted with indifference, believing that they have no responsibility to engage with Muslims. We close the doors of our churches and hearts. We take refuge in our own salvation and do not concern ourselves with the spiritual death of those outside. Some have reacted with hope! We pray that God will…

Islamic View of Jesus

I recently read an editorial that said that Muslims believe in the virgin birth of Christ. It is true; chapter 19 of the Quran describes the birth of John the Baptist, the Annunciation of the birth of Jesus by the angel, and the birth of Jesus. Even some so-called Christians would dispute the virgin birth! However, that is where the similarity ends. In the Quranic account Jesus speaks from his cradle, denies his deity and in an attempt to deny that he was the Son of God declares, ?It is not befitting to (the majesty of Allah that He should…

A Response to Ben Corey’s “5 Things I Wish Conservative Christians Understood About Islam”: Part 3

This 3-part article has been written by Dr. Fred Farrokh* as a response to Dr. Benjamin L. Corey’s Patheos blog?5 Things I Wish Conservative Christians Understood about Islam.? If you haven’t read that piece, we encourage you to do so! Parts one and two were posted previously. 5. Original: ?Muslims are most often the victim of terrorism.?Revision: ?Muslims are most often the victim of terrorism, which is almost exclusively perpetrated by Muslims.? Corey is again correct that Muslims are most often the victim of terrorists. This is heart-wrenching to observe. Many are truly innocent non-combatants. Innocent Muslim employees died working in the…

Original: ?Most Muslims do not view Christians or Jews as ?infidels,? nor are they instructed to kill us.?Revision: ?Most Muslims do not view Christians or Jews as ?infidels,? even though the Qur?an?s clear instruction, and Muhammad?s clear example, is to fight against Christians and…

A Response to Ben Corey’s “5 Things I Wish Conservative Christians Understood About Islam”: Part 1

This 3-part article has been written by Dr. Fred Farrokh* as a response to Dr. Benjamin L. Corey’s Patheos blog?5 Things I Wish Conservative Christians Understood about Islam.? If you haven’t read that piece, we encourage you to do so! Parts two and three of Fred’s response will be posted on Wednesday and Friday, respectively. First, I would like to commend Ben Corey for addressing an important topic. He also makes a key distinction in his opening sentence: ?Conservative Christians seem to have a lot of opinions about Islam and our Muslim neighbors.? When studying this topic, it is indeed helpful…
