Sharing the Christmas Journey Through the Eyes of Mary and Elizabeth (Part 2)

For three months Mary and Elizabeth shared this journey together as their pregnancies progressed.

Mary told Elizabeth of her visit from Gabriel and shared all that he had said. Elizabeth told Mary what had happened the day that Zachariah was chosen by lot to offer incense at the temple as he was going about his priestly duties.

ElizabethSuddenly the angel Gabriel appeared at the right side of the altar of incense. He was startled and filled with fear.  The angel told him not to be afraid and that his prayer had been answered.

Zachariah wondered which of all his prayers over his lifetime had been answered. The angel surprised him by saying that I will bear a son. “He even gave us his name- John- and told him that this baby would bring us great joy and delight and many would rejoice because of his birth and that he will be great in the sight of the Lord and would be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.

Gabriel said that John would bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God and that he would go on before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the parents to their children. But Zachariah questioned the angel asking, “How can I be sure of this since I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years?”

The angel told Zachariah that because he did not believe his words, he would be silent and unable to speak until the day this is fulfilled.  “That is why he cannot talk right now”, Elizabeth explained.

Mary shared everything with Elizabeth about Joseph, her fiancé a righteous man from the line of David. She had wondered if Joseph would believe her words or if he would reject her.  She dreaded the shame and disgrace of being divorced and pregnant. But an angel appeared to him in a dream and told him “not to be afraid to take me as his wife because what is conceived in me is from the Holy Spirit.”

The angel said that the baby would be a son and to give him the name Jesus– (the same name the Angel Gabriel gave me!)  because He will save his people from their sins.  Joseph woke from that dream and took me as his wife. I am so relieved.  I was not sure what he would do but I knew I had to obey God. God worked out all the details for us!
