Building a Bridge to Reach Muslims in America!

From Somalis in Minneapolis, to Chi Alpha international student ministries on college campuses, to the major cities of Chicago and New York, to smaller cities like Springfield, Missouri, there are many open doors to share the gospel with Muslims.

Although Global Initiative primarily focuses on training the local church in Muslim majority countries, we also partner with U.S. missionaries and Chi Alpha campus ministries to reach Muslims here in the United States.

In order to share the gospel with Muslims in America, believers must prayerfully build a relational bridge with Muslims and knock down the barriers that prevent us from sharing the message of salvation. Anger, fear, and indifference can build natural barriers that inhibit us from sharing Christ. Usually, our fear is of the unknown and our anger is misdirected.

Dr. Fred Farrokh, a former Muslim and one of our trainers, often reminds people to keep a proper perspective. A student at one of his recent training said: “Dr. Farrokh’s wise and moderate strategies placed an emphasis on respect for the culture and life of Muslims. We must understand that Muslims are not our enemies, but rather the Devil.” The Apostle Paul reminds us that we face supernatural barriers: “In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). This barrier will only come down as we pray and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ!

At a recent seminar in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dr. Fred Farrokh taught on “Sharing Christ with our Muslim Neighbors.” Over 100,000 Somali Muslims live in Minneapolis. As Fred was leaving town, he had the opportunity to put his teaching into practice by sharing the gospel with a Somali Uber driver.

Global Initiative’s training provides the tools to prepare Chi Alpha students to reach Muslims on their campuses. After a recent workshop during Chi Alpha’s Discover the Nations training, one of the students told our trainer, Sarah Hawkins, “Now we feel like this is possible!”

Our continued partnership with Chi Alpha ministries is creating opportunities for students to break down the barriers with literally hundreds of Muslims on their campuses.

Severin Lwali, the Chi Alpha National Director for International Students, recently shared on a podcast that Global Initiative is a key resource for Muslim ministries (listen to episode 58 below!). He shared that Global Initiative not only provides resources on how to share your faith, but also provides training to help the Muslim background believer stand in their faith once they return to their homeland. Severin challenges international students to consider the cost of following Christ, as many Muslim students who accept Christ will pay a high price when they return home.

Jesus paid the ultimate price by going to the cross, and He calls us to take up our cross and follow Him. What is Christ asking of us? What will it cost us in order for Muslims to hear the gospel? Reaching Muslims across America will require more believers who consistently intercede for a spiritual breakthrough. It will also take a willingness to walk across the street, across our school campus, or to another cubicle at work to begin a life-transforming conversation with a Muslim.

Your financial gift this month will help Global Initiative answer the call to partner with Chi Alpha and other ministries to equip the church to reach Muslims right here in America. Together we can do our part to declare the truth of Jesus to Muslims who do not yet know Him!
