We must respond to Muslims in light of our gospel mandate!

A U.S. missionary, Akhmed,* a former Muslim who is now reaching Muslims with the gospel, shared this story that took place in Virginia:

Last summer I was driving through a neighborhood in Alexandria. There I saw six or seven middle school Muslim children selling muffins. I parked nearby and began a conversation with the ordinary Muslim greeting. They were very polite, so I inquired about the very tiny muffins they had for sale. To my disbelief they were asking $2.00 for each muffin. I responded back, “No way!” and we began bargaining like good Middle Easterners, but they
would not budge on their price. Then I discovered why these tiny muffins were so pricey. The boys explained that every dollar raised was going toward building a new mosque right there in Alexandria!

Thank the Lord that He is calling gifted ministers, like Akhmed, to plant the church among Muslims here in America. Akhmed joined several Global Initiative team members in a recent training conducted with a group of churches in Pennsylvania.

As you know, the majority of our training takes place overseas in many nations where Islam is growing. With the changes in our “global” world, we cannot ignore the opportunities God has given us to reach Muslims here in America. As an International Ministry of the Assemblies of God, it is our privilege to partner with U.S. Missions of the Assemblies of God in bringing the gospel to Muslims in America! While Muslims have been in the United States for a long time, we now have a new wave of Muslim immigrants that continue to come to our shores.
No matter where you stand on the issue politically, as the church, we must decide how we will respond in light of our gospel mandate. Scripture clearly indicates that the gospel is for all peoples, everywhere!

While in Boca Raton, Florida, I passed three mosques on the way to the Assemblies of God church where I was scheduled to speak. Upon arriving at the church, I was shocked to see that a very large mosque stood directly across the street from the church. Finding mosques in our communities is no longer an anomaly, but rather the norm. Opportunities to share the Good News of Jesus can literally be across the street from where we worship and, most definitely, within the communities in which we reside.

Secular universities provide one of the easiest ways to connect with Muslims. The Global Initiative trainings held in partnership with Chi Alpha, the campus ministry of the Assemblies of God, enable us to train students to reach Muslims from many nations. For instance, here in Springfield, Missouri, a couple local churches, in conjunction with a few of our missionary team members, have had the opportunity to befriend and share the gospel with Muslims from the local colleges through an International Friends outreach. These students come from countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Bangladesh, and other Muslim majority nations.

We understand the angst that many Christians experience towards Muslims. What do I say? What do they truly believe? Can I trust them? It is through our trainings that we help answer these questions, give practical steps in how to share the Gospel effectively, and trust the Holy Spirit to touch hearts and minds for His love for Muslims!

Behind the veiled Muslim woman and the bearded Muslim man is a person made in the image of God. Christ came and died for each one of them and He desires for each of them to be reconciled to himself! Even the Apostle Paul declared that “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Phil. 2:10-11)

As we continue to pray for Muslims and give them the Word of God, the Holy Spirit can reveal to them that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God the Father. Thank you for partnering with us so that many Muslims can hear the Good News about Jesus!
