Ministry Update

We must respond to Muslims in light of our gospel mandate!

A U.S. missionary, Akhmed,* a former Muslim who is now reaching Muslims with the gospel, shared this story that took place in Virginia: Last summer I was driving through a neighborhood in Alexandria. There I saw six or seven middle school Muslim children selling muffins. I parked nearby and began a conversation with the ordinary Muslim greeting. They were very polite, so I inquired about the very tiny muffins they had for sale. To my disbelief they were asking $2.00 for each muffin. I responded back, “No way!” and we began bargaining like good Middle Easterners, but they would not…

Prayer is the difference!

Prayer is not just necessary, it is the critical difference between whether or not Muslims come to Christ! What power do we have to change people and circumstances? In comparison to the powerful work of the Holy Spirit, our efforts alone have little influence. Our persuasion, our words, our efforts may have a temporary impact, but until the Spirit of God moves upon a Muslim’s heart and mind, lasting transformation cannot take place! This is why we continue to declare that prayer is the spearhead of ministry to Muslims. Without fervent intercession on behalf of Muslims, we cannot expect to…

The Principle of Multiplication

During the modern missions movement, American and British missionaries were primarily sent to what we refer to as the Global South (Latin America, Africa, and Asia). God still calls Western missionaries, but a shift has taken place where even more missionaries go out from the Global South. What the Holy Spirit has done in the church in Latin America is so unique. For many years, Assemblies of God missionaries, empowered by the Holy Spirit, plowed the ground to see Pentecostal churches established. It came with great sacrifice and a pioneering spirit. In establishing new churches, Western missionaries taught missions principles…

Tanzania is poised for a great in-gathering of Muslims!

Like so many other nations in Africa, Islam is expanding rapidly in Tanzania. Currently, 21 million people in Tanzania are Muslims, whichrepresent nearly 40% of the country’s population. Islam is growing exponentially due to several factors. For instance, the island region of Zanzibar, just off the coast of Tanzania, is 96% Islamic. The nation has also seen an increase of Muslim immigrants from India and several Arab nations. In predominately Christian areas, Islam is investing significant financial resources into the economy and educational system. Ultimately, the evangelistic nature of Islam is pushing toward majority control of the country. For the…

Ten Students at a Jonah Initiative Training in India Affirmed God’s Call to Reach Muslims!

“Before this class I hated Muslims and I never prayed for Muslims. But after this class I have a burden for Muslims and now I pray for Muslims … and after college I want to go minister to Muslim people.” This is just one testimony of the 44 students who recently received training in India through the Jonah Initiative. At the end of training, our team led the class in a time of Jumaa prayer. As we know, prayer brings about the transformational work of the Spirit in hearts and minds. Prompted by the Spirit, our team member asked students…

Overcoming Fear, Anger, and Indifference!

As I reflect on what the Holy Spirit has done this past year, the Spirit’s empowerment is so evident! Heart transformation must take place in the follower of Jesus before it can happen in the heart of the Muslim. During 2018, the Global Initiative team had the privilege of literally traveling the globe! We trekked from Argentina to Africa, from Belgium to Bulgaria, from Romania to Indonesia, as well many places in between. However, we find a common thread in the church’s response to Muslims—fear, anger, or indifference! Nevertheless, the Holy Spirit is working powerfully to change hearts and perspectives….

The Spread of Islam Touches the Nation of Trinidad!

“I found peace and joy when I accepted Christ! There was fulfillment in my life and hope. I was no longer just existing!” This is the testimony of Asif,* a former Muslim living in Trinidad. Asif was born into a nominal Muslim family, but felt no purpose in his life. When he was about 15 years old, an elderly Christian woman, who was also his neighbor, began to share the gospel with him. This is often the case with Muslims coming to faith in Christ—a true follower of Christ acquires God’s heart for a person’s soul and then declares the…

The Holy Spirit is on the move in Europe among Muslim immigrants!

Recently I attended a gathering of our Assemblies of God missionaries who are serving throughout the European continent. The Spirit of God is moving in unique ways among Muslim immigrants in Europe. As immigrants risk their lives trying to find peace in a new land, they are discovering eternal peace that comes through Christ alone! As these new Europeans settle into life in their new land, the opportunity to share the Gospel increases. In their displacement and disillusionment with Islam, they are open to hearing the message of Christ! While immigration comes with sociological and political complications, both in Europe…

A Journey to Understanding Muslims

The Apostle Peter penned marvelous words to the Early Church, when he declared: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” A living hope! What comfort, what joy, and what true hope we have in knowing Jesus is alive! For those of us who have experienced the life-transforming work of Jesus Christ, we can easily forget what life was like without Christ. We must never lose the wonder and awe of…
